The Economics of Quartz
Quartz crystal is a piezoelectric material which forms the basis of quartz resonators used widely in quartz watches, computers and microprocessors for frequency control, and in crystal filters for waveband selection in communications devices. Since the 1970s cultured or synthetic quartz crystals have replaced natural quartz in these applications. Brazil is a major supplier of quartz crystal in the form of lascas: Brazilian production of lascas has averaged almost 3,300 tpa in the 5 years up to 1990, of which 90% has been exported. Almost all cultured quartz is consumed in quartz crystal filters and oscillators used in telecommunications equipment, watches and clocks and in microprocessor circuits for personal computers and for military and industrial machinery. With electronics applications accounting for around 95% of all cultured quartz consumption, demand for cultured quartz crystal is expected to grow by 5% per annum until 2000.
The fused silica industry which is considerably larger than that of crystalline quartz, account for 20,000 tpa of lascas and high purity quartz sand. Like its crystalline counterpart, it is finding a growth market in the electronics and related industries: it is also an important material in the production of fibre optic cables, where demand is expected to increase by 7% to 8% per annum.
Report highlights
The Markets - Quartz 1992 provides complete information on the end-use markets for quartz crystal and fused silica, including quartz resonators, optical applications, fibre optic telecommunications, semiconductor processing and lighting. It assesses the growth areas, the declining sectors, the reasons behind the current conditions and the prospects for the future.
The Industry - With a comprehensive analysis of production in 15 countries, the report gives a complete picture of world quartz and fused silica supply. It examines what is happening in the industry: mergers, closures, new projects, increases and decreases in output, and the impact of these developments.
The Figures - Clearly presented statistics combine with the detailed written commentary to produce an authoritative study. The report uses over 35 tables and figures to illustrate key aspects of production, consumption, end-uses, price trends, imports and exports.
