The Economics of Mica
After years of decline, the fortunes of mica appear to be improving. World production of ground mica is increasing, and the markets for sheet mica appear to be steady. While no major growth is expected, growth in individual markets such as functional mica fillers in plastics should more than offset poor performance in older applications such as oil well drilling and welding electrodes. Slow growth is predicted in the electronics industry, the main market for block and sheet mica: there is likely to be a shortage of good quality material. This report from Roskill analyses the mica industry world-wide - its production, consumption, markets, trade and prices - and examines the prospects for the next few years.
What the report gives youReport highlights
Future trends in mica demand are likely to be determined by the economic performances of the construction and automobile industries. In industrialised countries growth rates are unlikely to exceed 2% -3% pa. In industrialising countries the prospects for higher rates of growth in these industries are good for the short to medium term.
The market for titanium dioxide-mica pigments in paints has increased with the trend towards pearlescent finishes for automobiles. The automobile industry accounts for much of the 10,000tpa market for these pigments world-wide.
Production of scrap and flake mica is dominated by the USA, which accounted for 37% of world output in 1995. Other important producers include Canada, China, South Korea and Russia.
World sheet mica capacity was estimated at 16,286 tpa in 1995, with the three major producers, India, Russia and China, jointly accounting for 94% of the total.
China's exports of mica have increased during the past 5 years from 25,000t in 1990 to an estimated 44,000t in 1995. Recorded exports by Asian countries exceeded 80,000t in both 1994 and 1995.
