The global market for ground (GCC) and precipitated (PCC) calcium carbonate has been adversely affected by the global recession but is recovering, mostly because of rising consumption in Asia, the Middle East and South America. Consumption of GCC and PCC in the other major markets of North America and Europe is also recovering, but more slowly because of low economic growth rates. This changing pattern of regional growth in consumption has been one reason why the major international producers (Omya, Imerys and Minerals Technologies) and others (such as Schaefer Kalk) have opened new operations in Asia in recent years, particularly in India where the potential market is very significant. Within Asia, companies in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are becoming increasingly important regional suppliers of raw material for GCC production. The major markets for GCC and PCC are in paper, plastics, paint, adhesives/sealants and rubber are expected to remain so over the next five years. The paper industry is expected to remain the single largest market for both GCC and PCC but demand from the plastics and paint sectors in particular is expected to grow at a higher rate.
