Capacity expands to keep pace with consumption
Following a period of successful restructuring, the world's bromine industry is strong. Several capacity expansions are planned which should increase total world bromine production to 468,000tpy before the end of the century. Production is being increased to keep pace with world consumption, which is being driven mainly by increased output of brominated flame retardants. This market is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of almost 8% by 2000: the fastest regional growth is expected to be in Asia, and demand is being led by the plastics industry. Growth in bromine consumption in a variety of new end-uses has more than compensated for the loss of more traditional markets for ethylene dibromide and methyl bromide. Promising applications for bromine to 2000 include pharmaceutical intermediates, swimming pool disinfectants, industrial water treatment, air conditioning absorption systems and precious metal leaching.
What the report gives youReport highlights
1998 will see the world's first new bromine producer for over a decade. Ambar Inc of Michigan, USA, will have a production capacity of at least 9,000tpy of elemental bromine and brominated salts.
The total world market for flame retardants is estimated at just under 1 Mtpy, worth in excess of US$1,900M. About 45% of this is consumed in the USA, with 31% consumed in Western Europe, 14% in Japan and the remaining 1% in other Asian countries.
As new brominated flame retardant products are a point of differentiation between companies, manufacturers have had to invest in continuous research and development in order to sustain business growth. Many manufacturers of brominated flame retardant chemicals have already diversified into other flame retardant materials, in case more stringent and/or widespread legislation limiting the use of flame retardants comes into force.
Several of the world's major bromine-producing companies are developing their fine chemical manufacturing facilities, in recognition of the promising market for brominated compounds as pharmaceutical intermediates.
