Barytes

Oil and gas industry fuels demand for barytes in drilling fluids

World annual output of barytes has risen sharply in the early 2000s, with production increasing from 5.8Mt in 2000 to an estimated 7.8Mt in 2005, an average growth rate of over 6%py. Drilling fluids for oil and gas wells are the largest market for barytes, consuming about 6.1Mt in 2005, or some 78% of the worldas total barytes consumption. Because of the size of this market, many aspects of barytes production are determined by the oil and natural gas exploration industry, and the price of oil. Demand for drilling grade barytes has increased exceptionally strongly since 2003. In the longer term, oil and natural gas are expected to increase their share of total energy requirements from 62% in 2000 to 67% in 2020, which will increase demand for drilling grade barytes in exploration and development. Barium chemicals manufacture accounted for an estimated 14% of barytes consumption in 2005, with barium carbonate being the most important. Approximately 43% of barium carbonate consumption is used in the manufacture of television and computer monitor display glass, and a further 8% in other glass products. There has been a rapid decline in production of barium carbonate in the Western world, with a significant move to China.

The key trends, issues and developments in the market are analysed in this major new report from Roskill. It provides a clear insight into the industry and its trends, and an authoritative analysis of the prospects for the future.

Report highlights

World barytes reserves in 2006 are estimated to be approximately 200Mt. China and India together account for almost 60% of the world's barytes reserves and resources. The only other country with substantial barytes reserves is the USA, which has 9% of the worldas total.

China has been the largest producer of barytes for many years, but during the 1990s it strengthened its position, accounting for 52% in 2005, compared with 30% in 1990.

The USA is easily the largest barytes consumer, accounting for 39% of world demand in 2005, some 87% of which was imported. In contrast, China is the other major barytes consumer, accounting for 13% of world demand, although in this case demand was met entirely from domestic production.

Three US companies account for about 85% of world sales of drilling fluids. These are MI-SWACO (42%), Baroid Drilling Fluids (30%) and Baker Hughes Inteq (13%). They also control a significant proportion of barytes production and processing capacity worldwide.

Demand for barium chemicals is expected to rise more slowly as the growth of LCD and plasma TVs displaces barium carbonate in traditional CRT technology. This effect is disproportionate geographically as the decline in CRT requirement is slowest in China (where most CRT production is now based) due to high costs of LCD and plasma sets. Overall, a growth of 2-3% in the barium chemicals market is expected through 2015.

Fillers are the third significant market for barytes, accounting for 600,000t or 8% of world consumption in 2005. About half of this is used in the automobile industry. The market for filler applications is expected to grow at around 2.5%py to 2015.
